US Foodservice /GFG Division has a rich heritage dating back to the late 1800’s. Operating as the Grand Forks Fruit Co., the company provided supplies ranging from food such as eggs, flour, sugar, and salt to home supplies such as lamp oil, cloth, thread, and even clothing to individual families. Grand Forks Fruit Co. became one of the first corporations in North Dakota on December 24, 1903. On February 17, 1923, the company changed its name to Grand Forks Grocery Co. Over the years the primary customer base changed from individuals to small retail outlets, restaurants, and institutions in rural northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
In the late 1960s, Grand Forks Grocery Co made a direction change. As dining out was just starting to become America’s favorite past time, Grand Forks Grocery made a commitment to change its focus from retail to foodservice. In 1983, the name changed to GFG Foodservice to better reflect who we were and what we were all about. In 1986, through acquisition, GFG started its Bismarck distribution center. Today, the division operates two modern and state of the art distribution centers, one located in Grand Forks, ND, and the other in Bismarck, ND.
The company was a privately held independent distributor until July 28, 2000. At that time, GFG Foodservice became a part of US Foodservice, which is comprised of approximately 60 broad line divisions and has national distribution capabilities. Since that time US Foodservice/GFG Division has continued to grow and prosper. We have been able to retain our rich heritage and focus on the customer while enhancing our capabilities by being part of a larger national organization. This combination of local heritage, focus on the customer, and national support has helped us maintain our position as a market leader in the markets we serve!!
